Care should be taken after having your ears pierced to ensure there is no risk of infection. It is advisable to leave the original earrings in for around 6 weeks. This is so the new holes do not close over. Regular cleaning is a must, preferably twice a day using an appropriate cleansing antiseptic lotion. Chemists usually stock this product or buy one from the salon where you have your piercing. (Make sure you have your piercing done at a reputable salon that is clean and follows safe and hygienic practices.) Clean around the ears using a cotton swab avoiding any unnecessary touching near this raw skin. Rotating the earrings daily is also a part of the after care.

There are many things you can do to avoid infection. Products such as hairspray and cosmetics can irritate the area so keep them away from your ears. It is best not to go swimming in pools. Don’t let others touch or kiss your ears and avoid any unnecessary playing or fiddling with them. This just increases your risk of infection. Earrings can also become imbedded in your ear so check them regularly.

What happens when ears become infected after piercing? There will probably be swelling and your ear will be red and warm to touch. There may be a smelly, yellow discharge.

What should you do? Act straight away and see your Doctor. An infection needs treatment and care.

There are many reasons why ears become infected. It could be due to an allergic reaction to the metal in the earrings, poor hygiene practices in the salon or not being regular of thorough with aftercare. After the initial 6 weeks the original earrings can be replaced with others but avoid going without earrings as the hole can still close over. A little thought and care will ensure you don’t have any ongoing problems with a new piercing.
